As we walked across the parking lot to Clint’s car, Selene cast a glance over my shoulder, her back claws digging into my forearm. After spotting a puddle slick with car oil, she’d declared the entire lot a hazard and demanded to be carried. “I don’t get it. Why are we leaving? I say you challenge that witch to a duel!” she protested.

“You cannot be serious,” I muttered. “And, hey, mind your claws!”

Selene turned around to ride more conventionally in my arms the last dozen feet to the car. Clint caught my gaze as he used his key fob to open the doors. “Do you believe Angie’s story?” he asked.

I pursed my lips in thought as I deposited the grumpy old cat in the back seat. “Well, she finally came clean about the theft, and after I was already leaving. That shows some remorse, at least.”

“I say we call that fancy-pants lawyer of yours and tell him we want to press charges for vandalism,” Selene griped.

“We can’t do that,” Clint said.

“Why not? I don’t care if she gets fired.”

“No, I mean we can’t do that because even if she did tamper with the candles, Cora is not the aggrieved party. Technically, as soon as she dropped off the baskets to the Chalet, they were no longer her property. Delivery implies a transfer of ownership.”

“Ugh! Why must you two-leggeds make everything so complicated?” Selene’s tail twitched back and forth as we climbed into the front seat. She put her paws up on the back of the divider and glared at Clint. “Then who owned the candles before they were auctioned off?”

“August Nell, I assume,” Clint said. “He paid for them, although he then donated them to the charity … it’s kind of murky.”

“What isn’t, in this town?” I muttered. I was feeling a little grumpy myself. I had hoped to find some answers, and had only wound up with more questions. “Angie may or may not be the curse culprit. There were three other names on that list.”

“You really think Marvin could be behind it?” Clint asked. “Angie’s logic seemed a bit flawed. So he complains about fussy guests. Back in Chicago I ran in some very wealthy circles, and honestly, just because someone is dripping in diamonds and awash with high-dollar champagne, doesn’t mean they have basic manners. For all we know, Marvin had every right to complain about guests from time to time.”

I bobbed my head. “I also don’t think he would have freely printed up the list for us, knowing his name would be on it.”

“True.” Clint pulled out into traffic and we headed for my place. “What about the other name? Suede?”

“It says housekeeping department next to his name. So, my guess is they were there to refresh towels, linens, etcetera, but I suppose it’s worth looking into.”

“And then there’s good old Richy Rich himself,” Selene added. “Speaking of which, Cora, did you run his proposal by Mr. Lover Boy over here?”

“Proposal?” Clint’s eyes bulged.

“Oh, right. August offered to back me if I decided to franchise Wicked Wicks,” I told him.
